Our Roots
Early exposure to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fosters curiosity and prepares students for these fields. Unfortunately, many students – especially those in underserved communities – may lack access to engaging, hands-on STEM experiences that build long-term interest and confidence.
This gap is particularly evident in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), where only 33% of elementary students demonstrate proficiency in math despite a reported investment of approximately $20,000 per student, according to US News.
At SPROUT@UCLA, we envision a future where STEM education is accessible to every LAUSD student.
Our Mission
Our mission is to inspire the next generation of sprouting scientists in K-5 classrooms by providing free “STEM Field Days” to local elementary schools.
Led by UCLA undergraduate students, our Field Days allow students across the district to explore high-quality STEM activities. By bringing booths, activities, and resources, we create an experience where students explore various STEM-based concepts. These activities, led by undergraduate students of diverse STEM majors, allow students to directly engage with scientific concepts based on California’s Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS).
Our work for the K-5 students of Los Angeles would not be possible without the community’s support. We hope you will stand with our students and SPROUT, as we continue to fight for STEM equity.
